Do christians understand that when they try to 'prove' the existence of 'god' to atheists (evidently to win?

some kind of argument or debate) they are abandoning their 'faith'? Why, when most of them understand their own definition of 'faith' (belief in things unseen), do they try to witness for 'jesus' by proving something credible and tangible to atheists?
