Actually I believe that the Jedediah Smith was the first in around 1826 he came overland with a trapping expedition. He was arrested as it was illegal for foreigners to be in Spanish Territories, ironic ain't it. In the 1840's American Traders came to Los Angeles and Married into the Ranchero families in the area and began to trade for hides for goods that the Eastern Merchants could provide.
