Fabric softener for air died clothes?

I'm trying to boycott my dryer for financial reasons. When i use fabric softener the scent does not come through. After the clothes are dry they have no scent. I am using fleecy aroma therapy 2x yellow stuff. What is the cause of this? Is my washer over rinsing or should i just use more?
